The UC-HBCU Initiative
The UC-HBCU Initiative Summer Fellowship will provide up to four awards which will defray the cost of participation in a six-week graduate-level seminar offered by the Classics Department at UCSB, running from 24 June to 02 August 2019 and earning 4 transferable academic credits. Each student will research a topic in the Humanities and/or Social Sciences that stresses a multi-disciplinary approach to antiquity, applies the methods of literary analysis and material culture analysis, and follows anthropological and historical themes. Students will gain experience working with both primary sources and the secondary literature, and students will be expected to present research in oral and/or written form. In addition to a $3000 stipend, the fellowship includes:
• summer course tuition remission
• transportation to/from Santa Barbara
• room and board for 4 weeks at UCSB
• transportation to/from Athens
• room and board for 2 weeks at the ASCSA
• fee waiver when applying to graduate schools within the UC system
Furthermore, successful PhD program applicants will receive:
• five years of financial support within the UC system
